Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives

When the Civil War ended in 1865, more than four million slaves were set

free. Over 70 years later, their memories of life in bondage, ranging from

the brutal to the bittersweet, were preserved. This unique documentary

special brings to life their first-person stories--recorded by writers for

the government's Work Projects Administration in the 1930s--through

emotion-charged readings by more than a dozen top African American actors,

including Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle, Samuel L. Jackson and Oprah

Winfrey. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg.

The film is the centerpiece of the multifaceted SHARING HISTORY outreach

campaign which uses educational curriculum, community activities

nationwide, and a touring museum exhibition with the Underground Railroad

Freedom Center, as catalysts for public engagement with history and its

impact on contemporary life.
